SEMINAR OUTLINE

Introduction to Pre-Socratic Thought

  • Context and Key Figures: Brief overview of Pre-Socratic thinkers like Pythagoras, Heraclitus, Parmenides, and Empedocles. Discuss the emphasis on metaphysical inquiries and the nature of reality, which laid the groundwork for Plato’s thought.

  • Influence of Mysticism and Mythology: Highlight the mystical elements in Pre-Socratic thought, especially as explored in Peter Kingsley’s work, which emphasizes figures like Parmenides and Empedocles as mystics and shamans, not just philosophers.

  • Cultural Cross-Pollination: Introduce Black Athena by Martin Bernal, which suggests that Greek philosophy was influenced by African and Near Eastern sources, sparking dialogue on the multicultural origins of Western thought—a theme relevant to later Islamic contributions.
