3 hour seminar | Saturday 15th Feb 2025 | 2-5pm (UK time) | £39

This class introduces the life, works and teachings of al-Shaykh al-Akbar (The Greatest Master) Muhyiddin Ibn al-ʿArabi (d. 1240), beginning with a short biography then delving into a comprehensive overview of his mysticism. The topics explored include, but are not limited to, his cosmology, perspective on knowledge and gnosis, humanism and the arts. The class will then explore the importance and relevance of Ibn al-ʿArabi for contemporary Muslims, including challenges of culture, politics the arts and justice.

  • The Metaphysics of Ibn al-ʿArabi: The Unlimited Mercifier: From Ontology to Salvation

  • Ibn al-ʿArabi and the Modern Age: Contemporary Art, Culture and Resistance through an Akbarian Prism

TEACHER

Dr Ali Hussain

Dr. Ali Hussain has a PhD in Islamic studies from the University of Michigan, Department of Middle Eastern Studies. His research focuses on the image of Jesus Christ in the writings of Muhyiddin Ibn al-ʿArabi. He is also the founder of the Adhwaq Center for Spirituality, Culture and the Arts (@adhwaq.center), and is the senior creative advisor @greenmedicalonline and president of @artofhealingio. His publications include "A Nostalgic Remembrance: Sufism and the Breath of Creativity" and "40 Conversations With the Prophet ﷺ on Art and the Creative Process."
